👋 Hello, I am Fabien.

I am a researcher, software engineer and data scientist with a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Digital Communication. Having experience in prestigious academic institutions and in the industry, I lead the creation of prototypes for organizations to clarify their visions and to experiment with possible futures. For instance, my contributions led to introduce data-driven customer experiences at BBVA, to pionner the use of sensor data at Le Louvre Museum, and to initiate the application of location-aware mobile technologies at the Boeing Company.

My work has been cited in more than 2000 academic publications and has been exhibited at the Museum of the Future in Dubai and the Design Museum in Barcelona among other international cultural institutions.

Refined over the last 15 years with my colleagues at Near Future Laboratory, my approach is multidisciplinary. It is about being curious, about embracing the world's messiness, and about understanding first what to create instead of following the current tech culture of “moving fast and breaking things”. We are publishing The Manual of Design Fiction, a guide to our practice, its origins, its utility and its impact.

Since childhood, I write software as a creative routine. It helps keep my mind fresh and it streches my imagination. My current pet projects are Rumbo, a tool that transforms GPS trails into 3D video recaps; and Próximo, the first online text editor with a 'map it' button.

Each week I set aside a couple hours for Office Hours video calls for anybody to talk about early stage projects, ways to collaborate, a pressing challenge, etc. 📅 You can book a 45-minutes slot in my calendar.
