I’m Fabien Girardin (Dipl.-Ing. Ph.D.), a multidisciplinary technologist working at the intersection of people, culture, and intelligent systems.

With a Ph.D. in Computer Science and experience spanning both academia and industry, I collaborate with organizations that are trying to sense what might come next, just beyond the current core of their activities. My work focuses on emerging technologies approached with a people-first mindset, helping teams explore implications before they become constraints.

Over the past 15 years, my approach has been shaped through experiments conducted between places like Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Near Future Laboratory. It is deliberately multidisciplinary, blending creativity and imagination with logic, structure, and engineering rigor. I rarely work alone. Most projects are developed with a trusted network of accomplices who enjoy crossing boundaries between design, technology, and futures thinking.

I’m best known as a pioneer of futures design, particularly through the development and practice of design fiction, using speculative artifacts and narratives to make possible futures tangible, discussable, and debatable in the present. I co-authored The Manual of Design Fiction, a practical guide to the origins, uses, and impact of this approach.

Here on Medium, I write to plant conceptual seeds. These are provocations, frameworks, and reflections intended to help organizations, leaders, and practitioners think differently about technology, work, and the futures they are actively creating.
